Late night talk shows
What is the point of a house band on all these night time talk shows? Short of putting on a short segue between the monologue and the desk, or mindless banter with the host.
I have nothing against the musicians. It's a job, and they do it well, but couldn't they save money and just play music from a recording. Just pondering.

But I like the Max Weinberg Seven! But I could do without the house bands on Carson Daly (except for Lounge Against the Machine - they were cool).

I like him too, but I just don't see the point.

I might be wrong on account Ive never been to a live recording, but... I think the studio time lasts a lot longer so they might need the band for the studio audience? Does that make sense? I think Im talking out my ass on this one, never been to a live recording. But thats about the only reasoning I can come up with.

No. That does make sense, I had not viewed it that way.

Never really thought about it, but I would guess it's for the studio audience. Or maybe some of the singers need back up ...but who would want to be on TV without their own band?

Don't know. Maybe a singer that just left another band to do a solo career.

maybe it's just a tradition from the old days of late night tv and variety shows.

I can see that.

Yes, it's to entertain the live audience while the cast is taking breaks, changing sets, etc.

Ah, yes. That makes sense.
